Landscape Architect Brings Wide-Ranging Experience to Kentucky
November 28, 2012 | Louisville, Kentucky
More than 20 years ago, Kevin Rich moved to the bluegrass state seeking his degree in horticulture from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Nearly 17 years
later, he returned to Kentucky to establish his land planning, landscape architecture and environmental design firm with a local focus.
“My goal is to help local developers, property owners, and municipalities by offering creative and sustainable design alternatives,” Rich explained. “Many of my past projects took me across the country and around the world, but my roots are here, my family is here, and I’d like to share what I’ve learned to benefit our local communities.” A full-service planning and design firm, Rich Design Studios (RDS) has been slowly transitioning out of the national and international markets to focus on developing a local business base.
The firm offers a variety of services, including preliminary planning and concept development to site design, green infrastructure and construction administration, as well as navigating the various entitlement processes. “I’ve found that clients often appreciate having a single point of contact throughout all of the stages of project development” Rich said. “With many other companies, a client may get passed from one consultant to the next, depending on what stage the project is in. That doesn’t happen at Rich Design Studios.”
While bringing their fresh and unique design perspectives to Kentucky, RDS is able to guide new projects completely through the planning and design process – from conception to construction. And, with projects where construction has already been completed, the firm is adept at understanding a client’s needs and addressing the specific challenges of a given site, such as drainage, circulation or identity issues, building expansions or general property improvements.
That was the case when RDS was brought in to help with severe landscape and drainage problems at an existing neighborhood development in Lexington, Kentucky. The Home Owners Association for Townley Square Park had been experiencing numerous issues since construction. RDS inspected each home site and the neighborhood’s common areas and provided several unique and detailed design solutions for the community.
“Although it’s preferable to be involved at the front-end of a project, we are happy to help when a problem or challenge comes up after a project’s development,” Rich said, explaining that his past work in Arizona, South Carolina and even China and Panama have exposed him to a wide array of environments and the challenges that come with developing in these diverse areas.
The geography and climate of Kentucky brings its own set of challenges to any designer dealing with the environment, and having such a diverse planning and design background, coupled with a familiarity of the local landscape, enables Rich Design Studios to offer new and innovative solutions to common problems. “We are looking forward to establishing ourselves in Kentucky,” Rich said. “We are excited to be working in our own backyard and to be bringing beautiful and sustainable environments to the bluegrass.”
